Warriors take opener

Kamehameha returns three interceptions for touchdowns in 40-2 win over Maui High

August 28, 2010 – By ROBERT COLLIAS, Staff Writer

The first snap of the game sailed over the head of Warriors quarterback Bryson Souza and rolled 20 yards into the end zone – he picked up the ball and was buried for a safety 14 seconds in.

From there, it was an entirely different story on both sides of the ball as Kamehameha rolled to a 40-2 win over Maui High in the Maui Interscholastic League opener before about 2,000 fans on Friday night at War Memorial Stadium.

Still, O’Brien can see plenty of room for improvement.

”Execution,” the coach said. ”Obviously, when your first play from scrimmage sails over a kid’s head for a safety and on the opening kickoff our guy muffs it at the 15 and it rolls all the way back inside the 5, those are execution problems the first two plays of the game. That tells me we can do a better job getting ready for the game, to play at the beginning when the game starts.

”We all have things to work on, from the top guy, me, all the way down to the bottom guy in the program.”

The Warriors took control during a wild 20-second span late in the first half, scoring two touchdowns in a three-play flurry to turn a five-point advantage into a 19-2 lead at halftime.

With Maui High lined up to punt on fourth-and-6 from its own 24-yard line with 1 1/2 minutes left in the second quarter, Kamehameha Maui linebacker Aydan Lopes broke through the line and blocked Nicola Perez-Garreaud’s kick. The ball rolled to the 3 and Souza scored on the first play from scrimmage to make the score 13-2 with 1 minute, 24 seconds left before halftime.
